Online Participation for BBC Documentary

BBC is releasing a documentary series titled "Visionaries" from Sept to Oct 07. It is an interactive seven-part series that pits luminaries against each other and allows viewers to vote online for their most inspirational figure.

Each episode starting from September will feature 2 figures from each category such as:

Leonardo Da Vinci v Andy Warhol
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart v Madonna
Thomas Edison v Tim Berners Lee

Viewers are persuaded to vote by celebrity advocates who will argue the case for their chosen Visionary.
The winners will be announced in a special programme on October 20th.

The website will also have
- discussions on other Visionaries not featured
- fun quizzes
- producer’s blog describing the making of the series

Clearly, BBC is attempting to increase dialogue with their audience by integrating online and offline participation. For the documentary genre, such attempts are rare. This move will benefit advertisers as it increases exposure and encourages participation with the brand.
