MediaCorp Reshuffles Again

James Yip, current Executive Vice President (Sales) will be taking over Melvin Ang, Head of Airtime Sales from 1 April 2007. Melvin's resignation went public in February.

Currently, James Yip is overseeing advertising sales of Channel News Asia, all radio stations, Today newspaper and 16 magazines. His portfolio will expand to include all TV stations. For the first time in MediaCorp's history, the company will have one common head of all media sales.

This reshuffle presents MediaCorp with an opportunity to push for greater integration in presenting itself as a full scale media service provider. In the days to come, advertisers will stand to benefit as more integrated & effective advertising options are expected.

Spam Control Bill Proposed

The Singapore government is proposing a Spam Control Bill as part of a multi-pronged effort to tackle the problem of spam, which cost Singapore S$23 million worth of productivity loss each year.

The Bill demands Marketers to
1. Label all messages clearly with the letters “ADV” (stands for advertisement)
2. Provide an unsubscribe link so that consumers can choose to stop receiving messages
3. Include valid contact details so that consumers can clarify any information he/she finds misleading.
4. If the consumer opts out of a list, messages to that email must cease within 10 days.

This Bill highlights the need for permission marketing, and contexually relevant/ targeted emails. Riding on the consumer spam fatigue, marketers can drive advocacy amongst the true-blue group of consumers, adopting "Forwarding amongst the Network".

TV Cost Efficiency Worsens

Due to festive loadings and poor programme performance, cost efficiency worsened for most channels.

Some Highlights:

Ch 8 - Star Awards 2006 ratings were only at 26.5%, a 10% dipped compared to 2005

Ch U - Project Superstar programme cost increased but viewership increase was minimal

Ch 5 - Despite high viewership, Asean Football Champion had high loadings of 8 - 9.5 x which offset the ratings increase

Looking ahead, cost efficiency for Feb is projected to remain similar due to festive loadings and average programme performance.
